Overview
Project: Hydra is a large-scope redesign of the original 6 campaigns of SCBW. In addition to making the gameplay more challenging, complex, and engaging, it supports 2-player co-op and was built for version 1.16.1 of Brood War. The scope of the project involves large improvements to the map files and significant changes to the AI scripts, and these artistic liberties will result in an experience meaningfully removed from playing the maps that shipped 20 years ago.
Update 5 Sep 2018: As of now I am abandoning SC:R as a platform for custom content. Maintenance and bug patches for Rebel Yell will still ship until the 1.16.1 version of the project is launched sometime in 2019.
Update 10 Feb 2019: The 1.16.1 version is now available. A more comprehensive 2.0 version is in development.
Key Concepts
- Engaging and unique gameplay for both players.
The maps have been updated to support wildly varying playstyles. Player 1's setup are generally similar to the single-player maps, with player 2's experience being more unprecedented, benefiting from large-scale reworks to the missions themselves. This is designed to offer distinct setups for the two players, which will encourage replay value due to the disparate experiences of the two players.
- Accessible for Remastered. (obviously not anymore)
As these maps are multiplayer, the scope of the mod changes had to remain within the realm of what users can reasonably be expected to do in order to experience the final product. This means using Neiv's experimental exe packer, ‘Samase`, as well as the several plugins he’s developed to work with it, to keep the end user experience compatible with the latest patch. This means that all users have to do is run the modded exe and connect to battle.net normally in order to host and play the maps themselves.
- A difficulty representative of the story's scale.
Large-scale macro maps in the classic campaigns are a drag, and generally require victory conditions like wiping every missile turret from the map. Maps are either too easy or too boring for the BW veteran, and I sought to increase the difficulty in meaningful ways while also updating the victory conditions to encourage playstyles that are genuinely enjoyable for the player (i.e. not scouring the map for stray buildings).

Installation:
- if you don't already have it, download and install version 1.16.1
- place the maps in your 1.16.1 maps directory (usually `program files (x86)\starcraft\maps\`)
- place HYDRA1.16.1.exe anywhere you have read/write privileges, e.g. the maps directory
- place the wmode and wmode_fix dll files in your 1.16.1 installation directory
- run HYDRA1.16.1.exe — if you have problems launching, see below
For multiplayer:
- register an account at iccup.com and use those credentials when logging in - apply the reg file if you need the server
- select multiplayer -> expansion and connect to iccup ('The Abyss')
- host the map with Use Map Settings selected - remember to forward your ports if you intend to host
- remind your friends to run the mod as well!
For singleplayer:
- select multiplayer -> expansion
- connect to iccup or use one of the local area network options to create the lobby in multiplayer mode
- make sure you are in slot 1 and start!
For singleplayer offline:
- select singleplayer -> expansion
- select the map from your map listing and start the game
- note that some cosmetic triggers (e.g. center view) will be slower in singleplayer mode
Troubleshooting:
- If your exe throws antivirus issues, it's showing false positives due to the plugin injection code. The exe is safe for your PC.
- If your exe does not run after you select your 1.16.1 starcraft.exe, make sure your 1.16.1 installation directory is higher than your 1.2+ directory (by renaming it to SCBW, or renaming SCR's directory to zStarcraft, for example).
- If you have issues with windowed mode even after moving the dll files to the directory, try moving the wmode.ini file to your 1.16.1 installation directory.
- If you have any other issues, or find bugs with the maps themselves, feel free to report it to me directly! Email me at moc.liamtoh|ogonorP#moc.liamtoh|ogonorP or message me on discord. Pr0nogo#1940
