What are factions?

In Hydra, factions refer to AI personalities, which share consistent player colors, strategies, and preferences across all of their appearances. Examples of such factions would be Daggoth's maroon Zerg compared to the Overmind's magma Zerg, or Raynor's blue Terrans compared to the Magistrate's maya-blue Terrans.

Fleets of tanks and walkers are deployed to the front lines with brutal efficiency by Lieutenant Commander Tom Ratchet, an officer who takes great pride in seeing his opponents utterly crushed. His Factories work around the clock to churn out as many vehicles as possible in as little time as possible, often surprising opponents with vicious timings in early engagements. Sturdier infantry are held in high esteem by Ratchet, who employs them to provide covering fire during the precious seconds needed to set up Siege Tanks.

Delta Squadron expands operations conservatively, opting to dig into defensible positions and hold onto them for as long as possible. Their assaults are direct and constant, often coordinated with allied forces in an attempt to wipe an opponent in one prolonged strike. Ratchet relies on others for info, at times resulting in costly blind strikes in unexplored territory.

Omega Squadron
Leader: Anthony Toninsky
Color: Scarlet
Appearances: T04, T06, T07, Z01
Composition: heavy infantry early, heavy air late
Key units: Marine, Medic, Wraith, Science Vessel, Battlecruiser

The Confederacy's fleet and fighter squadrons comprise the ranks of Omega, with Admiral Toninsky at the helm of the military operations. Ground operations are rarely undertaken by Omega Squadron, though they maintain a full regiment of infantry and several of the Confederacy's walkers for such occasions, often scrambling their spacecraft as the footsoldiers provide reconnaissance and meet the hostile armies head on.

Toninsky is fond of hit and run strikes with entire wings of Wraiths, as a means to pick apart the economic foothold of his foes prior to striking with a more formalized fleet. The infantry squads of Omega are accustomed to hot-drops in enemy territory, providing distraction and valuable intel while the spacecrafts rally. In either case, Toninsky's opponents must learn to look to the skies for they are filled with Confederate craft.

Leader: Zasz
Color: Orange
Appearances: Z01, Z03, Z06, Z07
Composition: melee/air strains
Key units: Zergling, Vorvaling, Mutalisk, Guardian, Gorgoleth

The Garm Brood is best known for its surgical strikes and air dominance. Cerebrate Zasz pulls its strings, providing reconnaissance for their allies and expanding swiftly into the battlefield. Though Zasz expresses an affinity for the swarm's melee and air strains, the Garm Brood is home to all types of Zerg, and support strains in particular make frequent appearances in its ranks.

Small, early strikes are sure signs that the Garm Brood is active in the area, as Zasz works to isolate weaknesses in their foes. After probing the enemy, their swarm expands the hive cluster swiftly and without concern for small losses on the extremities, intending for at least a few of their expansions to remain standing and gather resources. The Garm Brood then takes to the skies and sets upon its enemies with staggering numbers of Mutalisks, using small armies of Zerglings and Vorvalings to tear apart any would-be defenders.

Appearances: T08, T09, Z01, Z02, Z08
Composition: strider w/ skirmisher support early, mech/air late
Key units: Dragoon, Hierophant, Reaver, Exemplar, Carrier

In addition to the legions of skirmishers provided to Tassadar, a mechanized battalion was pledged to the Executor's service. Praetor Asalamir of Alnathok leads these warriors, preferring striders over skirmishers and rounding his army out with crawlers and heavy spacecraft. Though decisive strikes remain Asalamir's forte, the Rangers are no stranger to strategic drops, and employ a small fleet of Shuttles for this purpose.

Skirmishers often pad Asalamir's early assault teams, though they are quickly phased out to make way for Reavers and Exemplars. When offered the opportunity, the Rangers secure forward positions and put a premium on vespene while funneling resources into Carrier fleets. Once a critical mass is attained, Asalamir wastes no time in orchestrating a crushing assault that aims to utterly obliterate his foes.
